What is Invisalign?

As an alternative to traditional metal braces, Invisalign is a set of clear aligner trays that eventually results in straight teeth. The trays are usually switched out about once a month and each successive tray brings the teeth into closer alignment. Not all patients are good candidates for Invisalign treatment at our Springfield clinic. Patients with extreme crowding or severely misaligned teeth may be a better candidate for traditional metal braces.

What Does Invisalign Entail?

Custom made trays that are worn 24 hours a day are generated from computer 3-D imaging. Depending on the patient’s situation, the trays are switched out every two weeks.

Is Invisalign More Effective Than Braces?

Braces are metal brackets affixed to the teeth and are connected to one another by wire. This structure allows for movement of the tooth or teeth to the desired position. Braces are more effective for extreme realignment and to close large gaps or spaces. In any other circumstance, however, Invisalign is just as functional, while being more aesthetically pleasing to many patients. Ultimately, it boils down to what needs the patient has and the results they desire.

What to expect during initial treatment:

The Invisalign process consists of two impressions: one for upper teeth and one for lower teeth. Profile pictures and pictures of your teeth taken at different angles are taken in order to assist both the doctor and the Invisalign lab during the fabrication of trays and to compare before and after Invisalign. The impressions are sent off to the lab, where they are used to make sets of Invisalign trays or aligners. Along with the number of aligners, the length of time patients are in Invisalign treatment closely correlates to the severity of the case.

After the impressions are sent off, it generally takes the lab 1-2 weeks to send back a computer generated proposal to the dentist. This proposal, called a clincheck, will give an approximation of your teeth’s current state and where they should be at the completion of treatment. Dr. Stunkel will review the clincheck with the patient, and if both are satisfied, the case will proceed.

Your Invisalign Treatment at Quail Creek Dental also includes:

Orthodontic treatments such as braces or aligners are just a sampling of how technology now operates to straighten teeth. They provide position, enhance a person’s appearance and enable proper function of the teeth. Braces, however, use metal wires to move the teeth, while Invisalign incorporates plastic trays or retainers. Recent statistics show there has been a 34 percent increase in patients that are employing this technique through their family dentist.

What Are The Benefits To Invisalign?

Each treatment varies from patient to patient but a few things to consider about clear brace technology:

· A patient may have had braces in the past and their teeth have shifted. Rather than use braces again, they choose Invisalign to keep their smile in perfect condition

· The trays are translucent so unless a patient tells people, often they are undetected

· It is an excellent option for uncomplicated tooth movement

· Is very comfortable for the patient to wear during day-to-day activities
